Non-profit directors are used to setting, working towards and assessing goals for their organizations. Yet, setting a goal for the board itself is rare, even though it can improve board effectiveness.

A board-effectiveness goal is one that applies solely to improving how the board functions. The simplest source to find out what your board needs is the results of your annual board assessment, but that is not the only option. If your board doesn’t do an an assessment, consider areas where it can improve. Issues I’ve seen with client boards include:
